Steampunk Adventures Some new directions and adventures!

Hi everyone and Happy New Year!!!

An open letter to the Steampunk Adventures team…

I am so happy with how 2010 has gone for Steampunk Adventures that I can’t wait to see how we advance in 2011.   The magazine has proven to be a small success and victory for us all in so many ways.

As I have conveyed to some of you I hope that we can continue to expand our magazine beyond the virtual borders of Second Life to some outside the boundaries of SL as well.  In that aim I am going to add to our goals as a magazine to be that of a literary review magazine.

From Wikipedia a literary review magazine is :

A literary magazine is a periodical devoted to literature in a broad sense. Literary magazines usually publish short stories, poetry and essays along with literary criticism, book reviews, biographical profiles of authors, interviews and letters. Literary magazines are often called literary journals, or little magazines, which is not meant as a pejorative but instead as a contrast with larger, commercial magazines.

I think we are very close to being there in  so many ways.  However I do think it will provide us with a certain “cache” to be able to promote Steampunk Adventures as such.

I believe that such a venture has to have a focus and I think that focus could be on steampunk, alternative or speculative fiction:

This includes the following:

Alternate history or alternative history is a genre of fiction consisting of stories that are set in worlds in which history has diverged from the actual history of the world. It can be variously seen as a sub-genre of literary fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction; different alternate history works may use tropes from any or all of these genres.

Speculative fiction is an umbrella term encompassing the more highly imaginative fiction genres, specifically science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and alternate history in literature as well as related static, motion, and virtual arts.

And of course Steampunk!
Kitsuko and Gordon I want to thank you so much for managing Steampunk Adventures so well through the various real life challenges that some of us have been dealing with ..you have done very well.

I understand the next issue has all the content done and is probably just awaiting layout..that is exciting!  We have 73 readers on the ISSUU site, for the current issue,  with 791 unique pages views..that tells me that most of our readers are really reading the mag! On the Subscribo we have almost 150  readers or so and getting more every day.  It’s all about getting Steampunk Adventures  and our writers some exposure.

With the balance of interesting Second Life stories that you all cover I hope that we can continue to nurture Steampunk Adventures.    As a literary review magazine I propose we run at least one annual contest.  I would like to get it set up so that we charge a small entry fee that will be used to fund the final prize.

Entry fee of $10 to be paid via PayPal to my email address once I make sure I have that set up right.   We will have two separate categories:

Short Stories

and

Poetry in keeping with the themes identified above.

Prizes in each category:

1st.  $35
2nd $ 25
3rd $10

Honorable mention:  no prize

All of the above will be published in the December/January issue of the magazine and/or a Chapbook / anthology.

Take care now!  Keep doing the good work you all do and let me know if you need anything.
